I've never used IM before. It seems awkward. I'm a life-long member of the "Worlds Worst Speller" club and never write anything without a dictionary right next to me. It would be difficult for me to communicate with patrons in this "so fast you can't look up a word " form.

Noone cares about spelling. Its not a lettter that will be keept in a keepsake box its just a quick communicTION TOOL. Say your "hi's" and then be gone! Easy!
Its true that nobody cares about spelling in an IM session--especially if its just a casual chat. I always felt a bit more pressure to spell correctly when I worked the chat reference desk, years ago. Maybe I'd be more relaxed about it now though, since I've been IMing for a while. BTW, my IM address is attached to my signature line in all my emails, and I'm available online all the time I'm here at work--so say hello sometime.
PS I got an IM message from Jim O'Grady two or three weeks ago. I don't know if you remember him, but he used to sub quite a bit at Marysville. He's living in California now and came across our website.
